Coming to Fårö is like balm for the soul

You only need to pause for a second to immediately be struck by the breathtaking beauty that Fårö offers. Maybe it´s the rugged landscape to the west with shingle that makes you breathless.

Perhaps it´s the sun-warm sand between your toes that remind you of a paradise. Or maybe it´s the mixture of cultural history, stunning scenery and relaxing atmosphere that makes so many visitors return to Fårö year after year. The island is filled with history embedded in an hauntingly beautiful and special nature. Fårö offers something for everyone!

Have a look around and enjoy a much needed time off

Apart from experiencing all the history and the scenic surroundings, the peak season is filled with activities and events on Sudersand and all through out Fårö. The island offers you a number of restaurants and cafes, a home bakery, flea markets, sale of souvenirs, crafts and fresh vegetables. You can also rent bicycles, kayaks och pedal boats.

At Sudersand, it´s the shallow sandy beach that attracts people the most. We also have loads of large green surroundings perfect for soccer, volleyball boule och some play in the playground. And a swim in our pool as a variety to a swim in the ocean is recommended.

Digerhuvud & Helgumannens fishing port

Digerhuvud is a several kilometer long rauk area/natur reserv and is Gotlands biggest rauk field. The rauks rise high and low from the sea and are scattered all along the coast. Along the coast line you also find the Helguman, Fårös best preserved fishing port that during the eighteenth century was Fårös most important.

In addition to it´s apparent and considerable cultural value, here you can also find memories from the time when Fårö´s population lived of fishing and seal hunting.

The Kuta-painting tells an exciting tale about a couple of brave seal hunters. During the winter of 1603, the seal hunters took to the ice but unfortunately the ice started to crack and the seal hunters found themselves drifting on blocks of ice. A few of them drifted ashore on the island of Gotska Sandön, while the others drifted all the way to the way across the Baltic Sea and were saved by the mainland.

Distance from Sudersand: 20 kilometers

At the Russian Isthmus on the southern tip of Fårö you find the so called English Cemetery, one of Fårö´s two burial cites for the cholera infected. During the Krim war (1953-1956) the allied Baltic Sea fleet used Fårösund as their military base. Both farmers and merchants made a good profit, but during this period a cholera epidemic erupted that killed both military people as well as civilians.

The Russian Isthmus is also a breeding place for a large variety of birds returning to this place every year.

The lighthouse of Fårö

Distance from Sudersand: 7 kilometers

The lighthouse of Fårö was built during 1846-1847. In 1953 electricity was installed in the lighthouse, but the light source before that consisted of rapeseed oil lamps and after that kerosene lamps. The tower of the lighthouse is 24 meters high. The lighthouse is as of 1977 unmanned. It is still in use and is owned and operated by the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The Langhammars

Distance from Sudersand: 15 kilometers

A majestic nature reserve with some impressive stone forms called “raukar”, some over 8 meters high.

The nature on Langhammars hammer is barren and surrounded by fields of shingle stone. An outstanding experience all times of the year. On the way out the well preserved farm ”Langhammars” from the 17th-century is located, and while passing the farm you will find yourself arriving to another planet.

Easter March

The easter march in Visby on “skärtorsdagen” is a long-standing tradition that attracts several thousand of participants, a festival for both adults and children. Dressed up as everything from easter bunnies, witches and chickens the participants march together through the streets of Visby. The goal is the easter eggs filled with candy that every dressed up participant gets at the end of the march!

The Primeur Premiere

Meet the Spring on Gotland. During the Primeur Premiere lavished tables filled with Gotlands finest primeur´s and delicacies are served. In the town of Visby there a large food market is held as well as lectures, food tastings, food shows and lots of culinary frolic.

The Bergman Week

Few places in the world ment more to Ingmar Bergman than that of Fårö. The landscape did not just play an important part in seven of his films, Fårö was where he lived and worked for long periods of his life before he settled there. The Bergman week is a 6 day long homage to Ingmar Bergman´s artistry, with movie screenings, seminars and guided tours to his shooting locations. The purpose is to keep Bergman´s work alive and available and to create a context where Bergman´s movies can meet a new audiens and where his world of ideas kan be discussed.
The Bergman week is arranged every year during week 26 by The Future of Fårö, Film on Gotland and The Gothenburg Film Festival in collaboration with the Collage of Gotland and the Ingmar Bergman Foundation.

The Roma Theater

The Roma theater at the Roma monestery ruin is one of Swedens biggest and most beautiful summer theater scenes. Every year thousands of enthusiastic spectators walk through the avenues leading up to the theater stage, to spend the summer night at the Roma Theater – while the twilight thickens and the theater light take over and enhances the mystique.

Almedal´s week (Politic Week)

The parliamentary parties, through their representatives on Gotland, are the main organizers of the Almedal´s week and Gotland Municipality is the main host. The Almedal´s week is always arranged during week 27.

The Children´s Choir Week

The Children´s Choir Week on Fårö in a recurrent and much appreciated summer event for both the young and the elder even though the children are the ones in focus.Since 1989 people have gathered to sing and have fun in Fårö´s wonderful landscape. In the beginning the number of participants were few, but over the years over 300 singers have taken part in six different choirs. The Children´s Choir week is arranged during week 28 every year.

The Stånga games

Gutnish games on a professional level! Front- & back-pärk, stångstörtning, gutnish pentathlon, spark Bläistre, rövkrok, herre pa stand, dräg´hank och täm stäut mm. Over 2000 participants! A true festival!

The Medieval Week

We´re moved back in time to the wear of 1361 when the town of Visby was a powerful trading town in the Hansa, and was plundered by the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag. Every year, during week 32, the medieval era returns to Gotland an Visby in particular. The Medieval Week is the country´s biggest historic festival with medieval music, theater, markets, spectacles, tournaments, lectures and courses. Over 300 events with a mixture of history, fairy tales, seriousness and festivity.

Market Autumn on Gotland

By the end of August, the yearly autumn markets on Gotland start with a large traditional market in Slite. The market season continues through out September and October with crowds, commerce and tivoli in the parishes of Havdhem, Kräklingbo, Klintehamn och Hemse.

Fårönatta (Fårö-night)

Discover Fårö and the locals creativity and charm during a late summer night in September! From 18.00 to 24.00 Fårö open it´s arms to you letting you enjoy music, local delicacy, freshly baked bread, leather clothes, soft lambskins etc…

The eateries are open late, the local grocery store Ica gives discounts and ghost stories are told amongst the cholera-graves. The evening end with a church service in the local church. Fårönatta is always arranged the third weekend in September.
